27th - 28th May 2007
Carry On Tours would like to introduce you to the weird and wacky world of cheese rolling!!!
The ancient and hysterical tradition of cheese rolling dates back hundreds of years and involves some wacky people hurtling down an almost vertical slope chasing an 8lb roll of Gloucester cheese. There are inevitably lots of injuries and a whole jumbled up heap of fun!
Anyone can enter and anyone can win, there are four races throughout the day including a women's race and a slightly safer uphill race.
Our two day package combines a wonderful day at Britain's largest and most spectacular gorge, Cheddar Gorge where we take in the stunning scenery and indulge in a cliff top walk around the rim of the gorge itself.
Afterwards we visit a real 'Cheddar' dairy nestled in the mouth of the gorge where our resident experts will take you around the dairy to see how cheese is made and will give you a little taster of England's favourite cheese.
We spend the evening discussing the days events over a beer in the 500 year old Coaching inn opposite our home for the night at a nunnery in Nympsfield, a quintessentially English village tucked away on the edge of the Cotswolds surrounded by ancient Neolithic long barrows and a mysterious unfinished mansion..
The next day we prepare for some fun over a hearty breakfast before we set off for a day of silliness at one of the UK's most eccentric festivals... the annual cheese rolling competition.
